Melbourne Docklands' Gateway
Project
The Red Glass Story - Realizing an Architects vision. Location: Melbourne Docklands, Spencer St. Melbourne, Australia Architect: Wood Marsh Pty. Ltd. Architecture Glass Supplier: Axess Glass Products Australia Awards: Commendation in Walter Burley Griffin Award for Urban Design; RAIA Award of Merit (Victoria) The Vision The realization of the Wood Marsh Architects' vision started when they came to Axess Glass with a strong idea of what they wanted. The towers at the Spencer Street end of the Gateway had to be visually striking. Wood Marsh were looking for a intense transparent red product that would complement the strong colours they had already chosen for other areas of the Gateway. The Search After researching many products including, Perspex, transparent films, specialized ceramic coatings and glass. Glass was the only product that could offer the intensity and permanence of colour they were after. The Architects came to Axess Glass to solve their problem. The problem being that the specific glass they wanted had never been produced before. The Solution Axess Glass' architectural consultants sourced from it's network of the world's best coloured glass manufacturers the people that could produce the glass and went to work on providing the red glass solution. They flew a production team to the largest of these manufacturers in USA, Spectrum Glass, and produced a unique product that matched the Architects specific vision and created an intensity of coloured light transmission that is truly unique.
